| This picture of Dave is from the cover of the program for his memorial service. His friend Don Fuller sent me a lovely and encouraging e-mail shortly after. Although we had exchanged a few e-mails in the past, that was the first time Don and I met face-to-face. The ongoing communication that we have had since then was born out of the shared grief of losing someone we cared about so much, but has grown into a friendship that stands on its own.. I have come to understand why Dave considered Don such a good friend and I'm proud to call him my friend as well. |

| Don has graciously given me permission to use excerpts from that first e-mail to tell the story behind the photo. If you knew Dave, I hope it makes you smile. If you didn't, I hope you get a sense of who he was. To me, he was my friend and partner, and the world doesn't seem right without him in it. |

The picture comes from one of our vacations that we used to take. Back in the day, once a year, we would choose a destination, save up enough money to cover our plans, and head out for about a week. It was taken in a ratty little motel in the Big Bend area. We had intended on tenting it, but the weather was bad, so we had found this little hotel. That evening we got some beer and cigars and played poker for hours and hours. The cigars was a Dave thing, he just mostly wanted them to add to the atmosphere -- us outlaws playing poker in the Bad Lands (Gimme another round, and make sure its in a dirty glass). Truthfully, the cigars gagged us both, and we just left them out and chewed them a bit, then gave up completely. That day, seemingly impossibly, Dave got two royal strait flushes. There is a picture of him somewhere holding up the second one and two fingers on the other hand. This picture was taken after the first one. He was no stranger to poker, but had never gotten a strait flush. The odds of getting a royal strait flush are astronomical. To get two in one sitting was magical.. He appreciated the ironic point that I made: You can do this, but can't win the lottery. |

During that same trip, we caught on Op (flathead) catfish on a throwline in the Rio Grande. We put him in the bathtub with the idea of keeping him alive and seeing if we could catch any more -- then of course have a fish fry like manly men. Well, we never caught another, and it got time to leave, and we wound up just leaving that Op swimming in the bathtub. We didn't know what to do with it -- it was 10 miles in the wrong direction to the river, and we were wore out, hung over and generally feeling not-so-spry. So we reasoned that we would most likely never come back, and just left that Op swimming around. We always had a good laugh imagining the reaction of the cleaning lade when she found that sucker. |

Dave was really excited
about upcoming events.
BluesPlus was an
important thing to him
and when he talked about
it there was a spark--
an inspiration. He
loved the music and he
loved being a part of
making BluesPlus come
together. |
